The latte stone is perhaps one of the most iconic cultural and historical symbols of Guam and the Marianas. It is also one of my favorite subjects to paint. There is so much more symbology in the shape to me, other than it's functional purpose of being a foundation of strength to build a home upon. With Guam's origins as a matriarchal society, I also see how its shape could represent the womb and canal through which life is born. For me, it is a symbol of the balance of masculine and feminine energy united as one. It holds even more sacred energy as it was also where our ancestors were traditionally buried.
